Russia launched one of its most expansive aerial assaults on Ukraine in recent months, deploying a wave of missiles and drones that pounded multiple Ukrainian cities early Friday morning. The full-scale strike, reportedly involving over 400 drones and 40 missiles, left at least three dead and nearly 50 injured, as emergency services scrambled to respond. Residential buildings were hit, transportation was disrupted, and civilians spent hours in underground shelters while sirens wailed above.

The attack appeared to target strategic and symbolic urban centers—Kyiv, Lutsk, and Ternopil among them—with a show of military might. High-precision long-range weapons rained down in a synchronized barrage designed to demonstrate that Moscow’s capacity and willingness to retaliate remains intact, despite recent Ukrainian successes.

Kyiv Reels Under Sustained Drone Fire

The capital city of Kyiv bore the brunt of the onslaught. Authorities reported extensive damage to homes and infrastructure, with metro systems halting after missile impacts tore through tracks. In the early hours, residents were awakened by the thumping noise of exploding drones and missiles. 

Air defense systems responded in full force, filling the skies with tracer rounds as soldiers tried to bring down the wave of incoming threats. The strikes killed three emergency workers and wounded dozens, underscoring the human cost of the ongoing conflict.

Machine gun fire, sirens, and the eerie buzz of drones overhead formed a grim soundtrack to the morning. Emergency personnel rushed to assist those trapped in collapsed structures, while military analysts suggested that the volume and precision of the attack marked a significant escalation in Russia’s campaign.

Lutsk and Ternopil Suffer Record-Breaking Bombardments

Farther west, the cities of Lutsk and Ternopil faced what officials described as some of the heaviest bombardments since the beginning of the war. In Ternopil, the regional military command labeled the strike as the most intense air raid experienced so far, with multiple missiles and drones causing injuries and damaging schools, government buildings, and residential blocks.

In Lutsk, 15 drones and six missiles targeted urban infrastructure, wounding five and spreading chaos across neighborhoods. Residents fled to shelters as emergency sirens echoed through streets filled with debris. Officials began damage assessments even as air raid alerts continued to sound, warning of potential follow-up strikes.

Russian Messaging: A Direct Response to Ukrainian Strikes

Russia’s defense ministry framed the large-scale assault as a direct counter to what it termed "terrorist acts" by Ukraine, referencing a recent drone offensive that damaged several Russian airbases. 

According to Russian officials, the Ukrainian campaign—dubbed the "Spider’s Web"—used over 100 drones and damaged nearly a third of Russia’s cruise missile platforms. In response, Moscow launched missiles designed to destroy Ukraine’s command infrastructure and send a clear geopolitical message.

President Putin had recently warned of a forceful retaliation during private communications with former US President Donald Trump, signaling Moscow’s growing impatience with what it views as provocations supported by Western powers. Trump reportedly conveyed to his advisors that Putin planned to respond "very strongly" unless peace progress was made swiftly.

Ukrainian Leadership Calls for Global Pressure

In the aftermath, President Zelensky urged global leaders, particularly in the US and Europe, to exert stronger pressure on Moscow. Framing the attacks as part of a broader campaign of terror, he argued that inaction by global powers amounted to complicity.
