President William Ruto has announced a national crackdown targeting individuals accused of torching police stations and injuring officers during the violent anti-government protests on June 25. The president made it clear that those responsible for orchestrating or executing the attacks will face the full force of the law.
This response follows chaotic demonstrations that swept across several parts of the country, during which enraged crowds reportedly set ablaze public property, looted, and assaulted law enforcement personnel. The president has described these acts not as protest, but as criminality cloaked in political defiance.
President Ruto declared that while his administration remains open to dialogue and democratic engagement, the violence targeting state institutions and the security sector cannot be tolerated. According to him, the burning of police stations and the deliberate targeting of officers represents a dangerous descent into lawlessness—one that demands immediate and visible action.
He accused political agitators of inciting chaos under the guise of economic frustration, alleging that a well-organized network used the opportunity to destabilize government authority and attack symbols of law enforcement.
Security agencies have since been instructed to launch wide-scale investigations and arrest all those connected to the June 25 violence. Surveillance footage, phone data, and eyewitness accounts are being collected to build airtight cases against identified individuals.
Already, reports indicate that multiple arrests have been made in Nairobi, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Mombasa, with more expected in the coming days. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is leading a task force specifically set up to fast-track legal action against the suspects.
Beyond the direct perpetrators, President Ruto revealed that the government is also pursuing those believed to have financed, planned, and coordinated the attacks. He said the law will not spare anyone — regardless of status or political affiliation — if found culpable.
Ruto hinted at possible links between political movements and violent groups, warning leaders against using young people as “weapons of destruction” for political mileage. He emphasized that dissent must remain lawful and peaceful.
To restore confidence in the state’s ability to enforce order, the president ordered the Interior Ministry to reinforce police installations in volatile regions and ensure a permanent deployment of elite units where necessary. He also promised compensation to the families of injured officers and plans to rebuild damaged police infrastructure.
The crackdown marks a significant escalation in the government’s stance on protests, especially those that result in destruction of public institutions. Whether it calms tensions or fuels further backlash remains to be seen.
