Kiambu County is making waves in the education sector with its audacious plan to transform Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE). Spearheaded by Governor Kimani Wamatang’i, the county has launched an unprecedented initiative—constructing 64 modern ECDE centers while rolling out a free daily feeding program. But as the county boasts of its efforts, one burning question remains: Is this just a well-orchestrated political move, or is Kiambu truly setting a new standard for early education in Kenya?
Unlike the rundown, makeshift structures that once passed for classrooms, these new ECDE centers offer a stark contrast. They feature dedicated classrooms for pre-primary 1 and 2, administrative offices, and fully equipped sanitation facilities for both students and teachers. Play areas have been thoughtfully designed to stimulate creativity, complete with swings, tunnels, and sandpits—elements previously reserved for high-end private academies.
For many parents, this investment signals a long-overdue commitment to quality education. However, critics question whether the county has a sustainable plan for maintaining these institutions beyond the initial fanfare.
