The mysterious death of Father John Maina Ndegwa has rocked the Catholic community and reignited fears about the dangers facing clergy involved in political or financial matters. His bruised body was discovered by a passerby along the Gilgil-Nairobi Highway last Thursday, sparking a criminal investigation.
The initial reports painted a grim picture: a priest found alone and injured, later confirmed to have died while receiving treatment. What initially looked like a tragic accident quickly spiraled into something darker and more complex.
Just weeks before his death, Father Maina had presided over a widely publicized Silver Jubilee Anniversary Mass in Nyahururu. The service was attended by several dignitaries, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
It was during this event that Gachagua allegedly made a large financial donation intended for church development. But according to investigators, this generous gesture may have inadvertently sealed Father Maina’s fate. Reports now suggest that certain individuals began pressuring the priest for a cut of the donation, wrongly assuming he had personal control over the funds.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Father Maina had confided in close friends about being followed and feeling unsafe in the days leading up to his death. Although no formal report was filed with the police, it’s now believed that he was abducted by people who were demanding a share of the donation.
When found, Father Maina reportedly told the boda boda rider who discovered him that he had been kidnapped from Nyahururu. He was alive at the time but had visible injuries, particularly to the head. Despite being rushed to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Gilgil, he succumbed to his wounds.
Today, Father Maina is being laid to rest at Tabor Hill Spirituality Centre in Ol-Joro Orok Constituency. The funeral Mass, presided over by Bishop Joseph Mbatia, has drawn priests, churchgoers, and community leaders. The atmosphere is one of grief, anger, and confusion as those who knew Father Maina struggle to process his brutal end.
Many recall him as a humble servant of the church, devoted to service and charity—not someone involved in power struggles or personal gain. His death has sparked outrage, with calls for swift justice and full transparency in the investigation.

This tragic case has reignited an uncomfortable but necessary debate about the growing overlap between religious institutions and political influence in Kenya. While churches often rely on donations for infrastructure and operations, the involvement of high-profile politicians in such events has introduced new risks.
The targeting of Father Maina over a donation he neither solicited nor controlled underscores the danger clergy may face when political and spiritual responsibilities collide. The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops has urged a thorough investigation and cautioned against the criminalization of clergy who simply accept support for their missions.
As investigations continue, key questions remain unanswered. Who exactly was behind the threats and eventual attack on Father Maina? Was this an isolated act of greed, or part of a broader pattern of intimidation against the clergy?
For now, the community mourns a man of faith whose life was cut short in a tragic twist of events. But beyond the sorrow lies a deeper national reckoning—one that calls for stronger protections for religious leaders and stricter oversight of political donations within sacred spaces.
