A Gen Z protester sustained life-altering injuries in Nairobi’s Central Business District during the mass demonstrations on June 25. The young man attempted to throw back an active tear gas canister launched by riot police when it detonated in his hand, resulting in the immediate loss of several fingers. The incident has triggered widespread alarm among demonstrators and renewed scrutiny over the use of tear gas in managing civil unrest.
Bystanders and fellow protesters rushed to the victim’s aid within seconds. In a display of both panic and compassion, they attempted to stop the bleeding using pieces of clothing and quickly evacuated him on a motorcycle to seek emergency treatment. Eyewitnesses described scenes of horror and disbelief as the gravity of the injury became clear. The identity of the injured protester remains undisclosed, and no official medical statement has yet been released.
Medical volunteers on the ground have long emphasized the danger of physically engaging with tear gas canisters. Although often instinctive, the act of picking up and throwing back the devices carries extreme risk. Once triggered, the canisters can reach high internal temperatures and are prone to volatile reactions. The explosion serves as a stark warning to those participating in future protests to avoid handling any active riot control munitions.
This incident has added fuel to an already volatile situation. Many Kenyans, particularly the youth-led Gen Z movement, view the injury as a symbol of excessive force and a failure of state restraint. While the protests were largely peaceful in intent—centered on remembrance and justice for victims of prior crackdowns—violent escalations like these have reignited conversations about police brutality and the militarization of protest response.
Protest organizers and medics continue to distribute safety leaflets, urging demonstrators to avoid confrontations, wear protective gear like goggles and masks, and immediately distance themselves from tear gas deployments. The emphasis remains on nonviolent civil resistance and self-preservation amidst the risk of police response.
Volunteers are also on standby throughout the protest zones, offering medical assistance and coordinating evacuations for the injured.
