President William Ruto emphasized that Kenya’s future leadership must be grounded in education and experience, positioning himself as the only Kenyan president with a PhD—a credential he believes is crucial for effective governance.
Ruto highlighted his nearly three decades in politics, including 15 years as a Member of Parliament and a decade as Deputy President, arguing that his academic background uniquely equips him to tackle Kenya’s challenges.
“Leadership today demands more than popularity; it requires knowledge and practical skills. I am proud to be Kenya’s only president with a PhD,” Ruto stated, stressing that this academic achievement helps him understand complex national issues and develop strategic solutions.
Drawing from his journey from humble beginnings as a chicken vendor to the presidency, Ruto underscored how his personal experiences have shaped his connection with ordinary Kenyans. He further attributed his leadership style to lessons learned from past presidents:
-The courage of Jomo Kenyatta
-The resilience of Daniel Moi
-The economic acumen of Mwai Kibaki
-The development vision shared with Uhuru Kenyatta
“This blend of knowledge, experience, and grassroots insight puts me in a unique position to transform Kenya,” Ruto declared to applause.
While Ruto’s confidence resonated with many supporters, opposition figures remain skeptical. Leaders like Caleb Amisi and ODM’s Edwin Sifuna have vowed to challenge his bid for a second term, citing concerns over governance and inclusivity.
On the other hand, some lawmakers, including ODM’s Peter Kaluma, recognize Ruto’s commitment to stabilizing the economy and fostering national unity, especially through collaborations with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah praised Ruto’s potential but warned that ineffective advisors may hinder his presidency. Wajackoyah suggested a reshuffle of Ruto’s inner circle to bring in competent strategists who can provide sound advice and improve decision-making.
With Kenya’s 2027 election approaching, President Ruto is making education and experience central themes of his campaign. Whether Kenyans will embrace this message remains to be seen, but it undoubtedly sets a new standard for political leadership discourse in the country.
