The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has instituted a 30-day closure of the Kisumu–Mamboleo (A1) Road, effective from Thursday, August 7 to Friday, September 5, 2025. The closure is aimed at facilitating essential resurfacing and structural improvements on the thoroughfare that connects Kondele to the Mamboleo Roundabout.
The affected stretch spans from the Kondele Roundabout, through Migosi, and ends around the Mamboleo Roundabout. During the work period, traffic will be managed via one side of the dual carriageway, allowing construction crews full access to the opposite lanes. This approach seeks to minimize disruptions while ensuring safe passage for travelers.
KeNHA has designed a traffic diversion plan with police and traffic marshals coordinating the flow of vehicles through the affected corridor. The remaining open lane will operate on alternating direction under controlled conditions. KeNHA urges all motorists to cooperate with on-site officials and adhere to posted signage and instructions to maintain smooth transit.
This closure is aligned with larger infrastructure improvements in the region. On July 24, KeNHA announced the start of rehabilitation works on the Kisumu–Busia Highway, a critical segment of the Northern Corridor trade route.
The corridor facilitates cargo flow between Mombasa, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The enhanced capacity is expected to improve logistics, reduce transit delays, and support cross-border commerce.
The upgrade of the Kisumu–Mamboleo stretch is strategically important. It addresses road degradation that has impacted both commuter and freight traffic. As one of the main regional transport arteries, ensuring the road’s long-term usability directly supports economic activity in western Kenya and the broader East African region.
Whilst KeNHA aims to minimize inconvenience, commuters and cargo operators should expect slight delays, especially during peak hours and transitions between opposing traffic flows. Drivers are encouraged to:
-Plan their journeys in advance and allow for extra travel time;
-Follow all instructions from traffic personnel;
-Give way where directed and avoid aggressive driving;
-Stay alert for intermittent works and lane closures.
By undertaking this temporary closure now, KeNHA demonstrates its commitment to upgrading transport infrastructure and meeting long-term regional integration goals. The work aligns with Kenya’s commitment to maintaining continental transport corridors that support trade, mobility, and economic resilience.
