The convoy of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua was disrupted this afternoon, when a group of youths barricaded Mombasa Road. The individuals hurled stones at vehicles, forcing the convoy to a sudden stop and causing a tense standoff. The incident paralyzed traffic along the busy highway, with motorists caught in long snarl-ups as police and security details rushed to intervene.
Among the worst affected by the chaos were journalists covering the procession. Media vehicles belonging to Standard Group and Royal Media Services came under attack, with one car sustaining damage. Some journalists reported minor injuries as they attempted to flee the violent scenes. The stoning incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of media practitioners during politically charged events.
Following the disruption, security officers escorting the DCP leader swiftly responded to contain the situation. Law enforcement cleared the blockade and dispersed the stone-throwing youths after nearly half an hour of uncertainty. Although shaken, the convoy managed to resume its journey toward Kamukunji Grounds where Gachagua was scheduled to address supporters.
The attack comes at a time of heightened political tensions, particularly following Gachagua’s much-publicized return from an overseas trip. While no group has claimed responsibility for the incident, analysts suggest that the stone-throwing could have been a coordinated attempt to intimidate the opposition figure. Political observers also note that such disruptions have become common in Kenya’s competitive political environment, where public rallies often attract confrontation.
Despite the delay and moments of panic, the Kamukunji rally proceeded later in the day as planned. However, the incident shifted focus from campaign messages to growing concerns over security and political intolerance. Gachagua is expected to address the attack during his speech, possibly linking it to wider challenges facing opposition politics in the country.
The Mombasa Road disruption underscores the fragility of political gatherings in Kenya, where tensions can quickly escalate into violence. With election campaigns gaining momentum, stakeholders have called on authorities to guarantee the safety of political leaders, their supporters, and journalists covering such events.
