Kenya’s Judiciary is at the center of a fresh political storm following allegations of a secret government plan to remove Chief Justice Martha Koome. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that President William Ruto has long sought to push Koome out due to her firm stance against political interference. However, the government has strongly denied these accusations.
Speaking in Meru County, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen dismissed the claims, stating that the Kenya Kwanza administration remains committed to judicial independence. He assured the public that there was no plan to interfere with Koome’s tenure and emphasized that the Judiciary must be allowed to function without political influence.

Murkomen further reiterated that President Ruto respects the rule of law and has no intention of undermining the Judiciary. He pledged full support for Koome, highlighting that she would be protected and given the necessary resources to carry out her mandate. His remarks were seen as an attempt to diffuse growing political tensions over the matter.
Gachagua, on the other hand, insists that Ruto has harbored plans to remove Koome for years, accusing her of being uncooperative with political directives. According to Gachagua, Koome’s refusal to bow to pressure has made her a target, and he warned that any move to oust her could ignite a political crisis, particularly in her home region of Meru.
Observers believe these allegations are part of a wider political struggle between different factions within the ruling coalition. Some analysts argue that the Judiciary has been a thorn in the government’s side, especially after several rulings that did not favor the administration. Others, however, suggest that Gachagua is using the controversy to revive his political relevance after being sidelined from government affairs.
The accusations have sparked concern among legal experts and civil society groups, who warn that any attempts to manipulate the Judiciary could undermine Kenya’s democracy. They have called for transparency and adherence to the rule of law, urging the government to publicly reaffirm its commitment to judicial independence beyond verbal assurances.
With the political landscape becoming increasingly volatile, all eyes are on Chief Justice Koome and the Judiciary. Will she withstand the alleged pressure and continue to assert judicial independence, or will political forces succeed in influencing the courts? The coming months will be critical in determining the future of Kenya’s legal system and its ability to remain free from external control.
