The former legislator was involved in a fatal road accident in Ongata Rongai, Kajiado County, while returning home. Eyewitnesses reported that the crash left him with severe injuries, particularly to his head and chest, which required immediate hospitalization.
Soon after the accident, Lempurkel was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Medical teams placed him under specialized care, working around the clock in an effort to save his life. Despite their best efforts, his condition remained critical due to the extent of internal injuries sustained during the crash.
On Sunday, August 24, 2025, the former MP succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at KNH. His passing ended a week-long battle for survival and left his family, friends, and political colleagues devastated.
Mathew Lempurkel first entered the political scene when he was elected as Member of Parliament for Laikipia North in 2013. During his tenure in Parliament, he was widely recognized for his strong advocacy for land rights and equitable resource distribution, particularly for pastoralist communities.
He also worked to strengthen education, healthcare, and infrastructure projects in his constituency. Though he served only one term, his influence in the Maa community and national politics was significant.
Beyond politics, Lempurkel was known for his unwavering support for the Maa community, consistently voicing concerns about land injustices, cattle rustling, and displacement of indigenous groups. His leadership style was often fiery and passionate, earning him both admiration and criticism. To his supporters, he was a fearless defender of their rights.
News of his death has sparked an outpouring of grief across the country. Leaders from various political divides, as well as ordinary citizens, have expressed their condolences and shared tributes to his legacy. Many have remembered him as a bold and uncompromising leader who never shied away from addressing difficult issues affecting his people.
