The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a five-day weather advisory warning of moderate to heavy rainfall from Friday, August 15 through Tuesday, August 20 in several parts of the country. According to the report, the rains will mainly affect the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, North-western Kenya, and parts of the Rift Valley.
The rainfall is expected to intensify during the second half of the forecast period, with some areas experiencing thunderstorms and localized flooding.
-Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu
-Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi
-Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori
-Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu
-Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet
-Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, West Pokot
Residents in these counties should prepare for possible traffic disruptions, mudslides, and flash floods, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
While heavier rainfall will be concentrated in the highlands and western regions, light showers are forecasted in:
-South Eastern Lowlands: Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta
-Inland areas of Tana River County
-Coastal Counties: Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, Lamu
-North Eastern Counties: Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo
These regions will mostly experience light intermittent rain and cloudy conditions, especially in the early morning hours.
The Kenya Meteorological Department also forecasted a cold weather spell for parts of the country. The Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern Lowlands, and the Rift Valley will likely experience very low temperatures, dipping to as low as 7°C in some areas.
The coldest period is expected in the first two days, with temperatures gradually rising to around 9°C toward the end of the forecast.
"Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions are likely to occur over some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands and the Rift Valley," the advisory stated.
In addition to rain and low temperatures, the department has warned of strong south-easterly winds, especially over:
-The Coast
-South-eastern Lowlands
-North-eastern and North-western Kenya
Wind speeds may exceed 12.86 metres per second, posing risks for marine activities, light structures, and airborne debris.
With significant weather changes forecasted across the country, Kenyans are advised to remain alert, especially those in areas prone to flooding or with limited drainage. Farmers, commuters, and outdoor workers should adjust their plans accordingly.
The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to monitor the situation and will issue updates as necessary.
