The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) is a cross-party caucus that brings together all women Members of Parliament from both the National Assembly and the Senate. Established in 2001 and officially registered in 2007, KEWOPA has grown into a vital platform for advancing women’s rights and representation. Its work focuses on ensuring that women’s voices are heard in lawmaking, public policy, and national decision-making.
KEWOPA’s main objective is to enhance the participation of women in governance and to create an enabling environment for gender equality. This includes drafting and supporting gender-sensitive legislation, advocating for the implementation of the Two-Thirds Gender Rule, and pushing for policies that support women’s empowerment and protection.
One of KEWOPA’s defining strengths is its ability to spearhead campaigns that address pressing social issues. Through initiatives such as the “Komesha Dhuluma” campaign, the association has raised awareness about gender-based violence and femicide, urging communities and authorities to take action. KEWOPA also works to eliminate harmful practices like female genital mutilation and invests in programs that address reproductive health and HIV/AIDS prevention among young girls.
KEWOPA places a strong emphasis on strengthening the capacity of women legislators. Training programs, workshops, and mentorship opportunities equip women parliamentarians with skills to be more effective in legislative debates, oversight roles, and representation. Beyond Parliament, KEWOPA mentors school-going girls, encouraging them to aspire to leadership positions and to embrace education as a tool for empowerment.
KEWOPA is governed by a leadership team comprising an elected chairperson, vice-chairs, a secretary, and other officials representing both houses of Parliament. This structure ensures inclusivity and coordinated efforts in implementing KEWOPA’s vision and strategic plans.
The association has recently scored significant successes, including nationwide campaigns to end femicide, initiatives to promote food security through kitchen garden projects, and sustained lobbying for the constitutional implementation of the Two-Thirds Gender Rule. These initiatives reflect KEWOPA’s commitment to both policy advocacy and grassroots empowerment.
Despite its gains, KEWOPA continues to face challenges such as resistance to legal reforms and cultural stereotypes that limit women’s full participation in leadership. There is also the ongoing struggle to achieve gender parity in parliamentary committees and high-level government appointments. Nevertheless, KEWOPA remains steadfast in its mission to create a fairer and more inclusive political landscape.
