Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially aligned himself with the United Green Movement (UGM) party ahead of the 2027 elections. During a Founding Members Forum held in Nairobi, Maraga was preselected as the party’s presidential flagbearer.
He explained that it took time to identify a political outfit whose ideals matched his values, ultimately settling on UGM as his platform to challenge President William Ruto.
Maraga pledged that if elected as Kenya’s sixth president, his administration would be anchored on the rule of law and constitutionalism. He emphasized that his vision is to reset the governance system to work fairly for all Kenyans, correcting failures in critical sectors.
“It is an honour I don’t take for granted,” Maraga remarked while accepting his role as party leader and flagbearer.
The former CJ promised to tour the country to popularize UGM, targeting not just the presidency but also parliamentary and county assembly seats. He expressed optimism about building a grassroots movement capable of reshaping the political landscape.
UGM founder and former Ndhiwa MP Agostinho Neto reaffirmed the party’s commitment to positioning Maraga as a strong contender. He noted that the 2027 elections would be a liberation exercise aimed at saving the country from mismanagement.
“The flagbearer position is a difficult task,” Neto cautioned, urging Maraga to inspire confidence among delegates nationwide ahead of the National Delegates Conference in early 2027.
With his entry into UGM, Maraga joins the growing list of contenders keen to challenge President Ruto in the next elections. His candidacy is expected to spark interest, given his judicial background and emphasis on constitutionalism.
