Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has taken direct aim at President William Ruto, branding him as an increasingly confused and out-of-touch leader incapable of addressing Kenya’s mounting social and political crisis. Speaking during his U.S. tour in Dracut, Massachusetts, Gachagua accused the President of blame-shifting while dodging the grievances raised by Kenyan youth, particularly the Generation Z protesters who have mobilized across the country since 2024.
“He is confused—very confused,” Gachagua said unapologetically, citing how Ruto has pinned responsibility for the protests on a revolving door of culprits: NGOs, churches, political rivals, foreign donors, and even parents. “One day it’s a coup attempt, the next it’s poor parenting. Tomorrow it might be the weather,” he remarked sarcastically.
Gachagua’s sharp criticism highlights what many are beginning to view as a crisis of leadership at the top. He accused Ruto of refusing to engage meaningfully with the Gen Z movement, instead resorting to conspiratorial blame games. While government supporters continue to accuse Gachagua and former President Uhuru Kenyatta of fueling the protests, the former Deputy President insists this is nothing but a desperate distraction from the regime’s failures.
“Rather than acknowledging concerns like police brutality, abductions, unemployment, and corruption, Ruto chooses to say these young people are being misled. He’s running from the truth,” Gachagua asserted.
The Gen Z protests, which began in mid-2024, have evolved into a powerful grassroots movement challenging state overreach and systemic issues. What began as an anti-tax protest has grown into a generational confrontation with the political establishment.

Yet instead of addressing the substance, Ruto’s administration has reportedly labelled the movement a front for political sabotage.
But Gachagua refutes this as paranoia. “It’s easier to blame political opponents than to face the reality that this government is losing legitimacy among its own people,” he said.
Meanwhile, Gachagua’s wife, Dorcas Rigathi, broke her silence after enduring personal attacks from political figures back home who have accused her of “controlling” her husband.

Mocking the insinuations, she fired back: “They say I’ve sat on him. How can I sit on a man who’s causing sleepless nights across the nation?” Her comment added a personal but powerful tone to the political feud, pushing back against misogynistic undertones in Kenyan political discourse.
The former Deputy President is actively engaging with the Kenyan diaspora in the U.S., seeking to broaden his political base and present himself as a voice of sober opposition amid rising public discontent.
His statements in America are not only aimed at defending himself from accusations but are also a strategic effort to position himself as an alternative leader in a country gripped by generational unrest and economic stagnation.
