Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o has revealed that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party plans to field a presidential candidate in the upcoming 2027 general elections. This move signals a clear intention to challenge the current president, William Ruto, at the ballot.
Governor Nyong’o emphasized that ODM remains firmly in the opposition. While it may engage with the government on select matters of public interest, the party is not part of the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition.
“The ODM party is participating in the government without being in the government,” Nyong’o clarified.
He stressed that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), led by President Ruto, formed the government and that ODM’s role is limited to issue-based engagement.
While asserting ODM's plan to front a candidate in 2027, Nyong’o left room for possible future negotiations or coalitions with Ruto's administration.
“If there is a discourse leading up to the elections to do otherwise, we will cross that bridge when the time comes,” he said.
This indicates that ODM is maintaining flexibility in its political strategy, depending on how events unfold before the election.
Nyong’o’s remarks come days after ODM leader Raila Odinga appeared to support continued collaboration with Ruto’s government. During a public appearance on August 8, Raila hinted at ongoing cooperation, even beyond 2027.
“I am confident we will move beyond 2027, and nobody should try to threaten us,” Raila stated.
This apparent difference in tone has sparked discussion about ODM’s direction ahead of the next general election.
Governor Nyong’o’s announcement adds to the growing political realignments taking shape in Kenya. As 2027 approaches, the question remains whether ODM will maintain its opposition stance or consider joining forces with Ruto’s government.
For now, the message is clear: ODM intends to challenge the presidency — and it’s keeping all political options open.
