President William Ruto’s pledge to reward Kenya’s national football team for every CHAN 2024 victory has now been honored in full. Following Harambee Stars’ hard-earned 1‑0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo on August 3, State House confirmed a payment of KSh 42 million, delivering KSh 1 million to each of the 27 players and 15 technical staff members. The funds were handed over by the Sports Ministry, led by Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya.
The payout follows Kenya’s opening match in the CHAN tournament—a narrow but crucial win at Kasarani, courtesy of a goal from Gor Mahia midfielder Austine Odhiambo just before halftime. The home crowd’s roaring support in Nairobi added to the occasion’s emotional significance. The win brought Kenya’s co-hosted CHAN campaign off to an encouraging start.
Kenya’s national team environment is now fueled by financial motivation. Ruto’s pledge includes similar rewards for victories against Angola on August 7, Morocco on August 10, and Zambia on August 17. Importantly, if the Harambee Stars lift the CHAN trophy at the conclusion of the tournament, the total tally is expected to reach KSh 600 million—an unmatched sum among the CHAN co-hosts.
Ruto’s large-scale incentive package has raised the bar in East Africa’s CHAN co-hosting pact. Uganda has offered KSh 301 million to its players for a tournament win, while Tanzania has pledged KSh 51 million. Kenya’s bold figures make it the most ambitious host in terms of financial backing for its team.
The cash rewards go beyond motivation—they are recognition of players’ hard work, sacrifice, and national pride. Seeing public affirmation of their efforts helps boost morale, underscores the importance of accountability, and solidifies fan support behind the team. Should the Harambee Stars continue their winning run, these payouts will represent both financial reward and national honor.
With the first incentive fulfilled and focus shifting toward Angola and Morocco fixtures, the Harambee Stars now play with added purpose. Each win not only keeps the team in the tournament but also unlocks tangible rewards. For both players and fans, CHAN 2024 represents more than football—it’s a national journey defined by ambition, dedication, and shared victory.
