President Donald Trump has directed the deployment of U.S. troops to Portland, Oregon, authorizing the use of “full force” if deemed necessary. According to the president, the move is aimed at protecting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities from protests targeting detention centers. Trump stated that the decision was necessary to safeguard federal property and restore order, insisting that ICE facilities were under threat from what he called “Antifa and other domestic terrorists.”
The announcement immediately drew strong reactions from Oregon leaders. Governor Tina Kotek dismissed claims that there was any significant threat to public safety, describing the city as calm and under control. She argued that the deployment of federal troops would be an overreach of presidential power, vowing to work closely with the state attorney general, Dan Rayfield, to explore legal options and prepare a response if troops are sent in.
Local officials criticized the move as a potential abuse of federal authority, warning that the presence of troops could escalate tensions rather than calm them. Governor Kotek emphasized that Oregon’s law enforcement is capable of handling protests without federal intervention, and she expressed concern over what “full force” might entail. Civil rights groups have also raised alarms, suggesting that the deployment could lead to excessive use of force and violations of protesters’ rights.
This deployment is the latest in a series of aggressive measures by the Trump administration aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration. Over the past months, Trump has vowed to protect federal property and punish those he considers threats to national security. His promise of “retribution” against protesters and the use of military resources in U.S. cities have reignited debate over the proper balance between federal and state powers in managing civil unrest.
While Trump confirmed the mobilization of troops, he did not specify whether he would activate the National Guard or deploy regular U.S. military forces. The announcement also left unclear what exactly was meant by “full force” and what actions troops might be authorized to take once on the ground. Military officials have indicated that they are prepared to support operations if directed, with more details expected as plans develop.
