At least 30 Palestinians were killed and around 300 wounded by Israeli gunfire while waiting for humanitarian aid in northern Gaza, according to the Hamas-run civil defence agency. The victims had reportedly gathered around aid trucks near the Zikim crossing, approximately 3km southwest of the site.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged firing "warning shots" toward a gathering of people but claimed it was unaware of any casualties resulting from their actions. A spokesperson from the IDF stated that the situation was still under review and that the reported casualty numbers “do not align” with their information.
Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of al-Shifa Hospital, told AFP that 35 bodies had been received following the incident. Later reports from the hospital raised the death toll to at least 48, according to the Associated Press.
In a separate development, six Palestinians were reportedly killed near a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) aid centre in Rafah. However, the GHF denied any deaths occurred at or near its facilities on that day.
According to the UN Human Rights Office, more than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed since May while attempting to access food aid. The Hamas-run health ministry reports that over 150 people have died from malnutrition, including 89 children, since the beginning of the conflict in October 2023.
Global humanitarian bodies are warning of a famine unfolding in real-time, despite Israel announcing tactical pauses in military operations to facilitate aid delivery. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called the current flow of aid a “trickle” and urged that it become an “ocean” to meet the overwhelming needs.
Amid growing pressure, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is set to visit Israel to address the humanitarian crisis. Meanwhile, Canada has joined France and the UK in declaring its intent to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September, signalling a shift in diplomatic stances among G7 nations.
The ongoing war was triggered by the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, which killed approximately 1,200 Israelis and saw 251 people taken hostage. Since then, the Hamas-run health ministry reports that over 60,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli military action, including nearly 19,000 children and almost 10,000 women.
