At least 344 people have died in devastating flash floods triggered by relentless monsoon rains in northern Pakistan, according to the National Disaster Management Authority. Of these, 324 deaths occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which bore the brunt of the disaster. Most victims were killed by collapsing homes and powerful torrents.
Rescuers are struggling to retrieve bodies and provide aid, with over 2,000 personnel deployed in the worst-hit areas. "Heavy rainfall, landslides, and washed-out roads are causing significant challenges," said Bilal Ahmed Faizi, a spokesperson for the province’s rescue agency. Rescue workers are forced to trek into remote areas on foot, while weather conditions delay relief missions.
In hard-hit districts like Buner, Swat, and Bajaur, residents described terrifying scenes. “It felt like the end of the world,” one survivor told AFP. Entire homes have been reduced to rubble, and many families remain reluctant to leave, as they continue searching for loved ones buried under debris.
The provincial government has declared several districts—including Shangla, Mansehra, and Battagram—as disaster zones. A government relief helicopter also crashed due to poor weather, killing five. Roads, electricity infrastructure, and communication lines have been severely damaged, complicating rescue operations further.
Pakistan's monsoon season, which typically runs from June to September, began early this year and is predicted to intensify. The meteorological department has issued new rain alerts, urging the public to take precautions. Over 650 deaths have been reported nationwide this season. The situation echoes the 2022 floods, which submerged a third of the country and killed around 1,700 people.
Residents shared heartbreaking stories. “I help retrieve the bodies of the children I taught,” said Saifullah Khan, a schoolteacher. Others lamented the loss of their homes and livelihoods. “We don’t even have clothes to wear,” said Abdul Hayat, who lost his daughter's dowry in the floods.
